The difference is what the machine actually pulled. I clock drying time with my watch. I carry each one up and down the basement stairs until my back files a complaint.

The tanks are the best part. They come off and go back on without a fight, which sounds small until you've owned a machine that makes you wrestle it every time you need to empty it. At 12.5 pounds, I can carry it up the stairs with one hand and hold the railing with the other. That's a feature, not a spec.
The suction is genuinely strong. It picked up pet hair I thought I'd already vacuumed, and I've been testing that claim on my own rugs for years. The brushroll doesn't tangle as badly as most, though you'll still want to check it after a big job.
Now the problems. The cord is 16 feet, and it won't reach across a family room. I've seen three buyers on Amazon report the same issue: the cord gets stripped down to the wire right where you hold it. I believe them, because the cord guide is cheap plastic. The tabs to remove the dirty water tank stick hard. I felt like I was going to break something the first time, and I'm not a delicate person.
The clean-out is the weak point. You'll want to turn it upside down in the sink and spray up around the brushroll, because the instructions don't tell you how much junk collects there. If you skip this, you're growing gross mold in a machine that cost you ~$150.
For ~$130-160, this is the one I recommend to most homeowners. It's not perfect, but it's the best balance of cleaning power and price in this category.
Hoover PowerDash Pet Compact
The Hoover is the machine you'll actually use because it doesn't hurt to carry. At 10.5 pounds, it's genuinely light, and the HeatForce drying feature works. I clocked my carpet dry to the touch in 30 minutes with windows open. That's rare, and it matters if you have animals that will walk on wet carpet and track it everywhere.

But I have a problem with the Hoover, and it's the same problem I see in buyer reviews. When I cleaned with it, hair gathered in golf ball-sized clumps on the carpet instead of getting sucked up. That's a red flag for a pet machine.
The brushroll pushes hair around instead of pulling it in. One buyer wrote in March that she had to go back over the carpet with her vacuum after using the Hoover, which defeats the purpose.
The tanks are small. The clean water tank is 48 ounces, the dirty tank is 40 ounces. You'll refill frequently on anything bigger than a hallway. And it dribbles when turned off. A tablespoon or two of solution will sit on your hardwood after five minutes. I've learned to set it on a towel when I pause.
That said, for ~$90-120, it's a good value if you know what you're getting. It's a spot and small-room machine, not a whole-house cleaner. One farm wife I respect described it as "small enough for storage purposes but it's mighty in the work it does," and she's right. Just don't expect it to clean your family room in one pass.

This is the machine for stairs, car interiors, and the spot where the cat upchucked at 3 AM. It's portable, it's got a hose, and it does real work on upholstery. I used it on a client's couch once and the water came out brown. That's proof.
The problem is capacity. The clean tank is 64 ounces, which sounds big, but you'll use it fast on anything larger than a chair. This is not a whole-house machine, and BISSELL doesn't pretend it is. It's a spot cleaner with better suction than most.
If your biggest job is a Yorkie who won't go outside when it's raining, and if you have a Yorkie you know what I'm talking about, this might be enough. You'll fill it frequently, but you'll use it constantly. For ~$120-140, that's a fair trade.
Shark StainStriker
The Shark comes with four tools, which makes it the most versatile portable in this list. I used it on car seats, a pet bed, and the stairs, and it did fine on all of them. The tools actually click in and out without a fight, which is more than I can say for some machines I've tested.
But it's still a portable. The tank is small, the cord is 18 feet which is better than most but still not great, and it doesn't have the suction of the full-size uprights. If you need a machine that lives in the closet and comes out for spot duty, this is a solid choice. If you need to clean a family room, keep looking.
At ~$130-150, it's priced fairly for what it does. It's not the best at any one thing, but it's good at everything you'd ask of a portable.
BISSELL ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro Plus
This is the machine I pull out when someone says "my carpets are ruined, help me." It's the biggest, heaviest, and most powerful machine on this list, and it shows. The heated cleaning actually helps with set-in stains, and the big tanks mean you can do a whole room without refilling.
But it's 19 pounds, and it's clunky. Carrying it up the stairs is a workout. And at ~$280-300, it's at the very top of this budget. If you have a family room that's seen manure on boots, grease, and spilled cocktails like my farm-wife friend's rugs, this is the one. If you're cleaning up cat upchucks in a hallway, you're overbuying.
The ProHeat is the machine I'd trust on a client's carpet. It's also the machine I'd think twice about dragging out of the closet for a small job. That's the trade-off.
The enzyme solution question
You can't talk about pet carpet cleaners without talking about what you put in them. The Bissell PET PRO OXY Urine Eliminator with Febreze is the one I keep on the shelf. It's an enzyme cleaner, which means it actually breaks down urine instead of just masking the smell. I've used it on old stains that I thought were permanent, and it got them out.
The Febreze scent is a personal choice. I'm not a fan of fragrance, but it fades quickly and it's not a candy bomb like some sample formulas I've tried. One buyer described a sample carpet shampoo as "smelling like candy" and that's not a compliment. This one is tolerable.
The mix ratio is clear, which is more than I can say for most solutions. If you're on septic, strain the waste water through a kitchen sieve you use only for this purpose. Carpet fibers will plug your leaching field faster than you'd believe. There. I just saved you a gazillion $$$. Really.
Should you buy it?
If your biggest job is a family room with a dog, buy the BISSELL TurboClean PET. It pulls real dirt, it's light enough to carry, and it's the best value in this category. If your biggest job is a Yorkie who won't go outside in the rain, the Hoover PowerDash or the Little Green Max might be enough, just know what you're getting.
The best machine is the one you actually operate. A 19-pound ProHeat that lives in your basement doesn't clean anything. A 10-pound Hoover that you use weekly does.
What I'm testing next
I'm two weeks into a long-term test of the TurboClean and the PowerDash, running them side by side on the same stains with the same Marty fur. I'm tracking cord length complaints, because it's the number one issue in buyer reviews and I want to know if any manufacturer in this price range has actually solved it. I'll update this when I have more data.
