Couches take a beating in my house. Marty claims the armrest as her throne, one cat treats the back cushion like a scratching post, and the other upchucks hairballs with alarming precision, always on the seam.
I've cleaned upholstery for paying clients for years, but my own sofa is where I test the portable machines.
The job is simple: pull out the pet hair, lift the stains, and don't leave the cushion sopping wet for two days.
I tested six portables and uprights on my living room furniture, my shop couch, and a client's microfiber recliner that had seen better days.
The winner, the BISSELL Little Green, is the best carpet cleaner for upholstery I've used, but at 9.5 pounds it's no featherweight, and if you're cleaning a whole house of carpets you're shopping in the wrong aisle.

I ran these machines on the same three stains: a coffee spill that had set for a week, a Marty mud incident from a rainy walk, and a mystery spot on the shop couch that I'm fairly sure was engine grease.
I weighed the dirty water tanks before and after each pass, because that's the only number that matters.
I clocked drying time with my watch, not with the manufacturer's claims. I carried each one up and down my basement stairs twice, once empty and once full, because my back has been the real reviewer since 2009.
I cleaned the machines afterward the way I'd tell a client to, taking the hoses into the bathtub and running water through until it ran clear.
That took longer than the cleaning on some of these units, and that's a problem.
Suction power
The Little Green pulled up 14 ounces of dirty water from a single cushion pass that I'd already vacuumed. That's the number that matters. The Shark StainStriker came close at 12 ounces, but its spray pattern is narrower, so I had to overlap more.
The uprights, the TurboClean and the ProHeat, pulled more total volume because they cover more surface area, but on a chair arm they're clumsy.
The Chemical Guys and Woolite solutions don't have suction at all, they're just chemistry, and chemistry alone doesn't lift dirt out of fabric.
Drying time
The Shark won this metric, and it surprised me. It heats the water, and hot water evaporates faster. My couch was dry to the touch in about 45 minutes with the Shark. The Little Green took closer to an hour and a half, which is still respectable.
The uprights left upholstery damp for three hours or more, because they're designed to flood carpets and then suck, and that's too much water for a cushion.
If you're cleaning a couch before guests arrive, the Shark is the one you want.
Ergonomics and carrying
The Little Green is 9.5 pounds, and the Shark is 10.2. Neither is a feather, but both have handles that don't dig into your palm. I carried them up and down the stairs a dozen times during testing, and I didn't curse either one.
The uprights are a different story. The TurboClean is 13 pounds and the ProHeat is 18, and carrying either one up a flight of stairs with a full dirty tank is a workout I didn't sign up for.
If you're cleaning a stair runner, fine. If you're cleaning a couch, you're hauling dead weight.
Ease of cleaning the machine
This is where manufacturers give up, and I've got the gross mold to prove it. The Little Green's hose detaches and rinses clean, and the nozzle comes apart without tools. The Shark's brush tool is the problem, it's stiff and the bristles trap hair, and I had to pick at it with a screwdriver to get Marty's fur out.
The uprights are worse. The brushroll area on the TurboClean is a contortion act to reach, and the ProHeat's nozzle has nooks and crannies that collect sludge.
If you don't clean these after every use, the hose grows mold, and that smell is the opposite of fresh.
BISSELL Little Green Portable
This is the machine I reach for first, and it's not close. The suction is the strongest of the portables I tested, and the 48-ounce clean tank means I can do a whole couch without a refill. The spray is adjustable, which matters when you're hitting a delicate fabric with a stain remover.
I cleaned a client's microfiber recliner with this, and the dirty water came out black. She asked me if I was sure it was the same chair.

The downsides are real. The cord is 15 feet, and I still needed an extension cord for a long sectional. The tabs on the tank stick, and I felt like I was going to snap one the first time I pulled it off. And the hose, while it rinses clean, needs a thorough flush after every use or it will grow mold. I've had that experience before, and it's not a minor problem.
For ~$120, this pays for itself in four rental cycles, and I've used mine twenty times. It's the best carpet cleaner for upholstery I've found.
Shark StainStriker Portable
The Shark is the runner-up, and it's a close race. The water heating is a genuine advantage, it dissolves grease better than cold water ever will, and the drying time is the best in this test. The two-tank design means the dirty water doesn't contaminate the clean, which is a small thing until you're cleaning up after a sick cat.
The brush tool is the weak point. It's stiff, it doesn't flex around curves, and it traps hair in the bristles. I spent ten minutes picking Marty's fur out of it after one session. The cord is 14 feet, which is fine for a chair but short for a sectional.
At ~$140, it's a little more than the Little Green, and I'm not sure the heated water is worth the extra ~$20.
If you're cleaning delicate fabrics that need gentle treatment, this is the one. If you're cleaning a couch that's seen real life, the Little Green pulls harder.
BISSELL TurboClean PET Upright
I've recommended this upright to homeowners for years, and I stand by that for carpets. It pulls up pet hair that I thought I'd vacuumed, and the dirty water tank comes off without a struggle. But for upholstery, it's the wrong shape. The brushroll is too wide for chair arms, the hose is short, and the weight, 13 pounds, makes it awkward to maneuver on a couch.

One buyer, a farm wife with seven dogs, described her Hoover as sucking harder than a buckle bunny working a roper for entry fees. That's the standard for suction, and the TurboClean meets it on carpet. On a cushion, it's like using a snowplow on a sidewalk. If you need one machine for the whole house, this is a solid choice. If you're cleaning upholstery, buy the Little Green and call it a day.
BISSELL ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro Plus
This is the storage king, and I mean that as a compliment. It's the most powerful cleaner I tested, and the drying time on carpets is genuinely fast, about 30 minutes in my test. The heated cleaning fights set-in stains better than any portable. But at 18 pounds and ~$280, it's a commitment. I carried it up my basement stairs once and decided it lives on the ground floor.
For upholstery, it's overkill. The hose is longer than the TurboClean's, which helps, but the machine is too heavy to balance on a chair while you work the wand. If you have a whole house of carpets and one couch, this is the one machine to buy. If you're a renter with a single sofa, you're paying for power you'll never use.
What else to consider
The BISSELL Woolite Advantage cleaner is the solution pick. It's safe on wool and silk, which is rare, and it doesn't leave a sticky residue. But it's not a machine, it's a liquid, and it won't pull dirt out of a cushion. Use it with a portable extractor, and it's a solid combo.
The Chemical Guys stain extractor is the budget chemical. It's strong on grease and oil, which is why I keep a bottle in the shop. But it foams aggressively, and in a portable tank that foam can clog the suction path. Dilute it more than the label says.
Neither of these is a carpet cleaner. They're tools that work with one, and I'd rather be honest about that than sell you a bottle and call it a solution.
Should you buy the BISSELL Little Green?
If you have a couch, a cat, and any respect for your upholstery, yes. It's the best carpet cleaner for upholstery at this price, and the suction is the proof. Weigh the tank before and after, and you'll see the dirt you didn't know you had.
The cord is short, the tabs stick, and you have to rinse the hose every time. But for ~$120, I'm very satisfied, and I've used mine twenty times.
If you're on septic, strain the waste water before you dump it, those carpet fibers will plug your leaching field.
